Investment Philosophy

Our expertise is long-term investing through active management of a diversified portfolio of common stocks of large, high-quality companies that we believe have favorable investment potential.  We believe this is the best way to achieve the dual goals of growing and protecting wealth for our clients. We may use ETFs and Mutual Funds for Small, Mid-cap and Foreign exposure.

For investors seeking a balanced approach, we complement equities with investment grade domestic bonds and may employ certain bond funds. This approach should provide both current income and dampen equity volatility.

Often, we are asked if we ever “go to cash” over concern the market may dip.  We don’t believe that we or anyone else can perfectly time the market, by selling before a downturn and re-purchasing just before a rebound.  We believe that an investor should hold a sufficient level of cash or bonds to provide for necessary living expenses.  This removes the need to sell an investment to meet current needs while the investment is down.  The impact of holding onto quality investments long-term most often leads to increased performance.

Another popular investment question is how we provide for income needs of a retiree. We don’t believe in trying to earn the required withdraw rate from the income of a bond or stock alone.  Oftentimes above average income comes at the cost of appreciation.  We believe a total return approach, meaning growth of the underlying investment (appreciation) plus income (from dividends or interest), will provide for both current income needs and greater appreciation over time.
